Crowns

Sometimes the decay or damage to your child’s tooth is too severe for a filling, or your child is prone to recurrent decay because of bad oral hygiene habits. In those cases, we will most likely recommend a crown.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that we place over the entire affected tooth. Crowns are used to restore the tooth’s original shape, size, and strength when the tooth is decayed, misshaped, discolored or broken.

Crowns are more durable than fillings. They will protect you child’s teeth against breaks or fractures until their adult teeth come in.

Types of crowns

  1. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel crowns are the most common type of crown used in pediatric dentistry and are sometimes referred to as “silver” crowns. They are strong and durable. They are less costly than other options. Because your child will lose the capped tooth eventually, he or she is not stuck with stainless for life!
  2. Stainless Steel Crowns With White Facings: To make stainless steel crowns look more natural, especially on front teeth, they can come with a white plastic facing. However, we must add extra bulk to adhere the facing to the metal which can make these crowns look rounded or thick. The white facing has a tendency to chip off, as well.
  3. There are other options available if stainless isn’t suitable. Dr. Nick and his team will discuss these with you.
