Dentistry for Children with
Special Needs

According to research, children with special needs are almost twice as likely to have dental problems compared to children without special needs.

If you are the parent of a special needs child, it’s essential to pay attention to his or her dental health care. The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry defines special needs children as those with chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions.

Cleft lip or palate, Down syndrome, neurological disorders, learning and development delays, cerebral palsy, and vision and hearing impairments are common medical conditions that require special dental care.

Special needs children may experience delays in tooth eruption, have malformed or extra teeth, crowding or poor alignment, or have problems associated with teeth-grinding. Some special needs children may have impaired immune systems or connective tissue disorders. In addition, certain medications can affect gums, cause dry mouth, or contribute to tooth decay because of added sugar.

Because your special needs child is indeed special, Dr. Nick and team have undergone specific training and education to provide the best dental care possible for your child.

Please make an appointment with us by your child’s first birthday. We can then develop a prevention and treatment plan for his or her lifetime dental care.
